5 Minute focus on Orihuela Costa

Where is it?

Orihuela Costa is a coastal region in the province of Alicante, Spain, just south of the city itself. It sits close to the border with Murcia, near La Manga and the beautiful Mar Menor. Indeed, the Cathedral City of Orihuela is some 20 kilometres from the coast and in the early 18th Century was given the title of “Capital of the Kingdom of Valencia” by Felipe V.

The region covers several seaside resorts, including Punta Prima, Playa Flamenca, La Zenia, Cabo Roig, Campoamor and Mil Palmeras.  The whole 16 Kilometre coastline has an abundance of Blue Flag beaches and numerous recreational activities and facilities.

How do you get there?

It is accessible via two international airports, Alicante and Murcia, both within a 30-minute drive of the area, with its many modern towns and sleepy Spanish villages, where time seems to stop.

Great for golf, I hear?

Orihuela Costa is also an excellent choice for golf holidays with three superb golf courses within a 5-minute drive, namely Las Ramblas, Campoamor and the famous Villa Martin, home of the Spanish Open a number of years ago. Indeed, as well as these, there is also a choice of another three 18-hole golf courses within easy striking distance of any area of the Orihuela Costa.

It's a fast-evolving place?

In the past 20 years, there has been a massive improvement in the infrastructure and facilities. It was far more rustic, back then. Now you can get a bus from Alicante airport, do one-stop shopping in the new La Zenia Boulevard and walk to around 600 bars and restaurants. Now there are building cranes dotted along the coast and a great choice of holiday accommodation and amenities. So where is one of the hot spots?

Cabo Roig - a snapshot

This is located at the southern tip of the Costa Blanca, only 10 kilometres from Torrevieja, with its delightful palm-lined avenues, lush gardens and mountainous backdrops and unrivalled views to the Mar Menor and La Manga, the famous sporting resort.

La Zenia is one of the most popular areas on the Costa Blanca and includes many recreational facilities, such as water sports, golf, go-karting, tennis, playgrounds and many more.

Other areas here would be Punta Prima, Playa Flamenca and Campoamor, all of which have different things to offer, with their natural sand dunes and pinewood backdrops to the long stretches of golden blue flag beaches
